Dear Colleague,
Re: Manchester Walk-in Centres
Laura Roberts previously wrote to you in December 2009 to tell you about temporary changes that were made across our local walk-in centres.
The temporary changes we made were as follows from January 2010:
- Standardise opening hours at local walk-in centres: Ancoats, Withington Community Hospital and Wythenshawe forum walk-in centres to open from 9am – 6pm Monday to Saturday
- No longer offer a walk -in service at Burnage Clinic.
We agreed to monitor the impact of these changes and to use this information to inform any further decisions about the centres. This letter is to inform you about how we have decided to proceed from April 2010.
Our proposal to stop the walk-in service at Burnage generated a lot of attention in the short term but we have not yet been able to gather enough information about the actual impact of the change on other local health services to make a permanent decision about the future of this service. A continued closure of this service will remain therefore until end of June 2010 whilst we gather relevant information from a range of services. We will also continue to engage with local people and monitor the situation, particularly following the opening of Hawthorne Medical Centre and walk-in service on Birchfields Rd.
We were able gather a range of information about the impact of the change of hours relating to the other walk in centre services including: patient and stakeholder feedback; PALS [put in full] enquiries; and data regarding the impact on other urgent care services such as local A&E departments. This information was taken into account when reconsidering the opening hours for each walk-in service.
As a consequence, we have reassessed our plan to standardise walk-in centre opening times across Manchester – instead, we want to make sure that the centres are open when local people want to use them most. Therefore, from 3rd May 2010 local walk-in centres will have the following opening hours:
Ancoats Primary Care Centre
- 08:00 – 19:00 Monday – Friday
- 09:00 – 18:00 Saturday and Sunday
Withington Community Hospital
- 08:00 – 18:00 Monday – Saturday
- Closed Sunday
Wythenshawe Forum
- 08:00 – 18:00 Daily (7 days)
Burnage
- Service remains suspended until July 2010
The provision of service at the Primary Care Emergency Centre have again remained unchanged.
If you have any comments about the contents of this letter please let us know what you think via either www.talkinghealth.net or talkinghealth@machester.nhs.uk
Yours sincerely
Laura Roberts
Chief Executive
